Trying to understand my sleep is a diffcult problem in itself, but understanding the science of sleep seems even more complex. In the my recent readings from Dreamland by David K. Randall, he spoke of the true importance of sleep. Yes I knew sleep was important but not to the significance that he puts it at. He himself states we ",are in a world wide crisis." He puts it up there along side world hunger, war, even covid. I was truly astounded by this accusation. Yet in another reading Sleep a Very Short Introduction by Steven W. Lockley and Russel G. Foster stresses the importance of sleep and how deep sleep restores the brain, but also the immune system. Reading this I question the affects of not sleeping, as well as why is there not a greater importance when it comes to sleep? We are in a constantly moving world, running 24/7 yet sleep, the thing that allows us to continue, is more of a burden than anything. Hopefully through class discussion and deeper reading I can understand the question that I have.
Something I would like to look into, is how the health of an individual is impacted by their sleep?
Does the weight of a person affect the quality or quantity of sleep?
How can I work to better my sleep?
With these questions I hope the learn more valuable information on this wormhole of a subject. Till next time sleep well.
Good job posing some preliminary topics or research questions that you may want to explore further. The immune system/sleep connection is one of my top interests for this class, as well. Especially during a global pandemic! We need all the immunity we can muster.
ReplyDeleteMultiple questions definitely were raised as we embarked on the beginning topics of sleep. Some have been answered already but there is still a plethora of them which are yet to be answered. Hopefully we become sleep geniuses by the end of this semester!
ReplyDeleteI agree with David K. Randall that we are in a world wide crises of sleep deprivation. Humanity has taken on this mindset that, as you said Kade, sleep is a burden but it is actually what allows us to continue forward (Well said)! If all humans are sleep deprived, how will we ever get anything done and not just at the end product itself but the journey that led to it?
